Steven Adelsheim, MD, is a Clinical Professor & Associate Chair for Community Engagement at Stanford Psychiatry, directing the Center for Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing. Steve’s work focuses on early detection/intervention programs for young people. He leads the effort to bring allcove to the US, an integrated youth mental health model, opening in 2020. Dr. Adelsheim also leads PEPPNET, the national clinical network for early psychosis. Steve also works in youth suicide prevention, tribal mental health, policy, and telehealth.

BAGOT, MD

Kara Bagot, MD is a child & adolescent psychiatrist, an assistant professor and the Medical Director of the Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai-Center on Addiction/Partnership for Drug Free Kids alliance. Her research background is in adolescent substance use disorders (SUDs) and overlapping childhood psychopathology. Dr. Bagot’s current work focuses on the effects of technology on development of SUDs and psychiatric illness in children and adolescents, and ways to use mobile and digital technologies to improve assessment, monitoring and treatment adolescent SUDs.

Elizabeth Barnert, MD, MPH, MS is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA. Dr. Barnert’s clinical work is in pediatrics at a Los Angeles County juvenile hall. A Cuban-American born and raised in Los Angeles, she is passionate about improving health outcomes of vulnerable youth, especially Latino children and adolescents.

BERGMANN, PH.D

Luke Bergmann, Ph.D, is the Director of Behavioral Health Services for the County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency. Prior to this position, Dr. Bergmann worked for 9 years in New York City. He most recently served as Assistant Vice President over Behavioral Health at NYC Health + Hospitals, the nation’s largest public hospital system and before that, as Director of the Office of Program and Policy in the Bureau of Alcohol and Drugs at the NYC Department of Health. Dr. Bergmann has also held a variety of academic research and faculty positions, including at Oregon Health and Science University, The University of Michigan and the City University of New York. Dr. Bergmann was trained at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Ph.D in Social Work and Cultural Anthropology. He completed post-doctoral fellowships at UC San Francisco’s Institute for Health Policy and UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health.

Joshua Feder MD is Editor in Chief of the Carlat Child Psychiatry Report. He conducts research with Fielding Graduate University in Infant and Early Childhood Development, UCSD and SDSU. Dr. Feder is a Medical Director at Quicksilver Software, developing relationship-supporting technologies, and travels extensively with the International Network on Peace Building with Young Children helping families impacted by armed conflict. Dr. Feder is active in policy advocacy and serves on the American Academy of Child Psychiatry Resource Group on Youth at the Border, supporting asylum seekers and newcomer families.

BENJAMIN I.
FELLEMAN, PhD

Benjamin I. Felleman received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Seattle Pacific University. He completed his predoctoral and postdoctoral training at UCSD and the VA San Diego Healthcare System. He has worked with adolescents and adults across a range of interdisciplinary settings. Currently Dr. Felleman works as a staff psychologist at the VA San Diego. He also serves as a faculty member in the UCSD Department of Psychiatry and on the Board of Directors at Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD).

GABRIEL, PhD

Dr. Tyler Gabriel is a Clinical Psychologist at the Oceanside VA Mental Health Clinic, and he provides evidenced-based CBT and DBT treatment to Veterans and their families. A licensed psychologist for nearly 30 years, Dr. Gabriel specializes in the brief therapy treatment of mood disorders, PTSD and substance abuse, and focuses his approach to empower his clients and maximize their capacity for resilience.

GILLESPIE, MD MHPE

R.J. Gillespie, M.D., M.H.P.E, is a general pediatrician with The Children’s Clinic in Portland. He attended medical school at Oregon Health Sciences University, graduating in 1997, and completed his residency and chief residency at Rush Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois in 2001. He also earned a Master of Health Professions Education from University of Illinois – Chicago in 2007. He currently is researching parental Adverse Childhood Experiences and their effects on child outcomes, and is a practice-based quality improvement consultant.

Dr. Sara Haas is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Counseling serving as a program director in the school counseling program. Dr. Haas graduated from the University of North Texas with her PhD in Counseling specializing in play therapy. Previously, she was a Professor of Practice at the University of San Diego (USD) where she taught primarily in the school counseling program and led workshops on expressive arts and play therapy. Her publications, presentations, and research agenda focus on child-centered play therapy, expressive arts, developmentally appropriate interventions, and trauma.

KARIPPOT, MD

Dr. Anoop Karippot is the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego, CA. He is also the Medical Director of Snoring and Sleep Center at AKANE Institute of Allergy Asthma & Sleep Medicine (www.akaneinstitute.com ) with special interest to the care of children and adults with sleep disorders. He is currently the President of California Sleep Society and Immediate Past President of the San Diego Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is a founding member and the Past –President of Pennsylvania Sleep Society and has several leadership positions related to health care in California and national organizations. He is Board Certified in General Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Karippot is one of the few physicians certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine and is also a Registered Polysomnographer (RPSGT). Most recently, Dr. Karippot has held faculty appointments in Sleep Medicine, Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Penn State University Hershey Medical Center and University of Louisville School of Medicine. He also teaches residents and fellows at University of California – San Diego and Scripps Mercy Hospital. He has medical practice in San Diego county and is affiliated with Scripps Health System, Sharp Healthcare, Palomar health and children’s’ services. Dr. Karippot is a Distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DFAPA), American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (DFAACAP) and a fellow of American Academy of Sleep Medicine(FAASM). He has been an active member of Standards of Practice Committee of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine with contributions to several practice parameters in sleep medicine. He has numerous publications, abstracts, book chapters and oral presentations to his credit on various topics in sleep disorders, psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry.

Dr. Jessie Menzel is an assistant clinical professor in the UCSD Department of Psychiatry and is the founder and director of the Pediatric Clinic at the UCSD Eating Disorder Center, a partial hospital program for children ages 7-12. Dr. Menzel specializes in the delivery of Family-Based Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Exposure and Response Prevention therapy for restrictive eating disorders in children and adolescents. She also provides training and supervision at the EDC and in the UCSD Psychiatry Residency Program.

PAVLOVICH, MD, MHS

Wendy Pavlovich, MD, MHS is a general pediatrician and medical educator at Family Health Centers of San Diego and serves as pediatric outpatient training director. She currently chairs American Academy of Pediatrics, California Chapter 3 Committee on Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma-Informed Care. She completed her pediatric internship and residency training at the Boston Children’s Hospital/Boston Medical Center Combine Pediatric Residency Program. She earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and her Master’s in Health Sciences from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

PELAYO, MD

Rafael Pelayo, MD is a clinical professor at Stanford University. Since 1993 he has been a part of the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic. He teaches the popular Sleep and Dreams undergraduate course. He helped lead the effort to delay school start times in California. He has served on advisory boards and leadership positions for the National Center for Sleep Disorders Research at the NIH, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the National Sleep Foundation, and the California Sleep Society.

SUSAN
WRITER, PhD

Susan Writer has her doctorate in clinical psychology and works full time as Psychoeducation & Public Affairs Liaison at Aurora San Diego. Susan has a private practice, trains, lectures, and consults on mental health/substance use issue in adolescents, adults, and older adults. Topics include: (dys)functional relationships – including bullying; crisis intervention/de-escalation; suicide and self-injury; cannabis use; sexual health; trauma; grief and loss; life transitions including gender transition and coming out issues in LGBTQQIIAP individuals; technology boundaries; and stress management/self-care.

NICK
YPHANTIDES, MD

Dr. Nick Yphantides is an advocate for those in his community who need it the most. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer for San Diego County and its 3.3 million residents (1% of America’s population). He is the Founding Co-Chair of San Diego’s Childhood Obesity Initiative, was the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of one the largest network of Community Clinics in San Diego County, the CMO of the Council of Community Clinics and was the publicly elected Chairman of the Board for Palomar Health, the largest Public Hospital District in California.

Dr. Nick currently serves on several Boards including San Diego Health Connect (our regional Health Information Exchange), the San Diego County Medical Society, Be There San Diego, Champions for Health and several other community based, educational and charity organizations.

He is thankful for the fact that he has never seen a patient with private insurance in his life. As a result of his personal health transformation he now advocates for population health transformation. Dr. Nick is a cancer survivor and has been to as many countries as he is old. His daughters Veronique and Zoe are the joy of his life and they make their home in Escondido, California.
